第一场由化学老师陈力老师主讲——“神奇的化学

(陈力:毕业于南京师范大学物理化学专业,主要研究方向为物理化学,研究生期间从事碳纳米材料的制备,荧光特性研究及分析应用。 )

    The first talk was delivered by our very own Chemistry Teacher, Mr. Chen (A graduate from the Chemistry department of Nanjing Normal University. His main research is in the field of physical chemistry and carbo nano-materials.)

1.“彩虹杯 “Spectrum Beakers”

酸碱指示剂能够通过颜色的变化区分出溶液的酸碱性。在陈老师的指导下,一名学生将不同的酸碱溶液加到装有指示剂的烧杯中,烧杯中液体颜色出现丰富多彩的颜色。

Through the use of colour, a pH indicator can tell us the pH value of a solution.  With Mr. Chen’s guidance, one of our students used the indicator with beakers filled with different solutions. The solutions showed the whole spectrum of colour demonstrating differing pH values.

2.消失的红色 The End of Red!

将氢氧化钠加入事先混有无色酚酞的盐酸溶液中,实验先出现红色,但马上又褪去,直至溶液呈现红色。

       A hydrochloric acid solution of phenolphthalein is usually colourless. However when adding sodium hydroxide, the solution all of a sudden turns a bright red before immediately disappearing again.

 

 

3.大象牙膏 Elephant Toothpaste

将发泡剂、碘化钾和双氧水混合后,溶液迅速产生大量泡沫,并溢出圆底烧瓶。

By mixing foaming solution with potassium iodide and a hydrogen peroxide solution, a huge flurry of bubbles with fly out and the beaker will overflow.

 

4.蒸气喷雾 Steam Spray

将黑色二氧化锰固体加入到双氧水中,反应放出大量热量,使液体瞬间沸腾转变为水蒸气。

    By placing black manganese dioxide in a hydrogen peroxide solution, a large amount of energy will be released, causing the solution to reach boiling point in the blink of an eye. This then

transforms into large quantities of steam.

 

5.饮料变色 Multi-coloured Drinks

碳酸钠遇酚酞指示剂,溶液呈现为粉红色,酷似鸡尾酒,加入氯化钡溶液后,变成乳白色的牛奶,再加入盐酸后,溶液产生大量气泡,变为无色的雪碧

When sodium carbonate meets a phenolphthalein indicator, the solution will turn a bright pink, almost resembling a cocktail! When hydrochloric acid is added, a large quantity of bubbles are produced, the colour toning down to look like a glass of Sprite instead.

 

6.银镜反应 Silver Mirror Reaction

硝酸银、氨水、氢氧化钠和葡萄糖溶液混合后,迅速摇晃,不一会儿,圆底烧瓶底部出现一层亮闪闪的银镜。

When a solution of silver nitrate, ammonia, sodium hydroxide and glucose is mixed together, it will quickly start to shake. Then after a small period of time, a layer of glistening silver will appear around the beaker.
